About the event

Join us for Reading Nature, our new book group on the natural world! This book group, which will meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30 pm in the Aldrich Room, is co-sponsored by the Howe Library and the Hanover Conservancy. Discussions will be lead by some combination of Barry Matthews of the Hanover Conservancy, Jared Jenisch of the Howe Library, and Susie Howard of the Thetford Conservation Commission. Attend in person or online via Zoom.

Email Jared at jared.jenisch@thehowe.org to get on our email list or for more information. Book group attendees do not need a Howe Library card to check out book group books -- they are available to all residents of the Upper Valley. Copies are available at the reference desk.

Our inaugural book will be The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan.

Francie Lin writes in The Boston Globe, “Tan is a tremendously charming emissary from the world of birding . . . [Her] curiosity, along with a sharp eye and a novelist’s penchant for narrative, has been channeled into an absorbing, quirky book of days focused on the avian ecosystem Tan has established in her Sausalito backyard . . . The intensity of Tan’s love for her visitors makes The Backyard Bird Chronicles an unexpectedly moving account regardless of your level of interest in bird-watching. Because while the book is about goldencrowned sparrows and Cooper’s hawks and hummingbirds, it’s also a book about survival, adaptation, and chance.”
